Rossin childhood

Born in 1964, Rossin grew up on the Danube River in Ruse, Bulgaria, amid the rich cultural styles of Baroque and Viennese architecture. Influenced by its structure, form, and ornament, he began painting at the age of 6 and was introduced to the classical techniques of Old Masters at 12 years old. At 14, Rossin was accepted into the National High School of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, and graduated from college at the prestigious National Academy of Fine Arts. His curriculum included portraiture, anatomy, perspective, art history, and aesthetics.

Ross began his art career in the 1990s by traveling the world. He lived in Japan for five years, painting over 150 portraits of its national leaders. It was here that he absorbed the Eastern aesthetics of minimalist backgrounds, stark compositions, and attentiveness to negative space and fused them into his classical training.

Discovered by Europeans in Japan, he was soon given solo exhibits in France, Germany, Belgium, and England. His portrait of the Lebanese Patriarch painted at that time now hangs in the Vatican.

In 2001, Ross moved to the United States with his beautiful wife, Ava, and their newborn son, Michael. He was invited by the United Nations to display a solo exhibit, Ultimately Human, at the Palace of Nations in Geneva. Today, Ross is honored with more paintings in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery than any living artist. Ross’s talent also includes sculpture, most notably a nine-foot bronze statue of Hank Aaron that stands behind home plate at the Atlanta Braves’ Truist Park.

His hyperrealist style portrays the warm spirit of his subjects. Every brushstroke, each highlight, and each shadow carries emotional weight. He seeks a silent dialogue with his subjects who appear alive on the canvas about to speak.

In Rossin’s contemporary paintings, he pulls back the curtain of who we are as citizens struggling to make sense of our place in a rapidly changing world of technology, finance, politics and social unrest.

Told in a series of conversations between ancient mythologies in dialog with the defining spirits of our modern time, each painting tells a hauntingly beautiful story.

Rossin lives in Atlanta, Florida, and Bulgaria and is exclusively represented by KingArts.
