What is really going on here to disturb the initial impression of joy and beauty? Yes, we know that happiness and youth are ephemeral. But this image challenges the very meaning of happiness and of what truly gives us satisfaction. Horizontal lines in seemingly cheerful colors, like static across an old TV screen, disrupt the sunlit swimming pool scene, just as storm clouds fill the sky above the idyllic countryside and white-steepled building—a church?—in the distance. That questions the very existence of what we consider to be real. For that matter, to what extent does our happiness exist in our minds alone? The lines between virtual and actual are eternally blurred.
